How Bad is Substance Use Disorder in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania has the third-highest opioid overdose rate out of all states in the U.S. Opioids are responsible for 65 percent of all overdose deaths.

60% of adults drink alcoholic beverages, and 17% of adults in the US are “binge” drinkers. An estimated 300,000 people experienced a substance use disorder in the last 12 months.

In 2010, there were 57,300 admissions into alcohol and drug rehabs in Pennsylvania. Heroin is used more than half of the time, followed by cocaine. Heroin addiction is extremely difficult to stop and there is currently a crossover between heroin addiction and addiction to opiate painkillers.

In data from 2011-2014, according to the U.S. Department of Criminal Justice, Pennsylvania ranks 14th in the nation for drug-related deaths. The rate in 2014 was 15.3 per 100,000.
