Does Florida Blue Rehab Cover Mental Health Treatment?

Yes, Florida Blue covers mental health care services. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) made mental health care an essential benefit, meaning all health insurance providers must offer some coverage.

Florida Blue insurance may cover costs associated with:

  • Hospitalization for mental health
  • Inpatient facilities for mental health
  • Outpatient treatment programs for mental health

Coverage is typically limited to licensed medical professionals. In other words, you often cannot get coverage to treat mental health conditions using non-evidence-based therapies, like art therapy. You may also need to go to an accredited treatment facility.

Florida Blue Rehab Inpatient Coverage

Florida Blue provides inpatient coverage for alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and mental health disorders. However, the benefits will depend on your specific plan. Inpatient treatment may come with a limit, such as a maximum length of stay and other restrictions.

The BlueSelect Bronze 1452 plan covers inpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorder with 50% coinsurance. No coverage is provided until you meet the annual deductible of $6,900 for in-network care.

Meanwhile, the BlueCare Bronze 2351S plan covers 100% of the costs of inpatient treatment for mental health and substance use disorder as long as you see an in-network provider. No coverage is provided until you meet the annual deductible of $9,100.

As you can see just from these two examples, plan coverage can vary widely. This is why it’s crucial to contact Florida Blue directly and get specific information about the benefits available to you.

Florida Blue Rehab Outpatient Coverage

Florida Blue provides outpatient coverage for alcohol addiction, drug addiction, and mental health disorders. The benefits vary depending on your plan, and there may also be limits and restrictions, like the number of calendar days you can get treatment each year.

The BlueSelect Bronze 1452 plan covers outpatient mental health and substance use disorder treatment with an $85 co-pay per visit. The deductible does not apply for in-network outpatient services in this category for this plan. For in-network hospital visits and out-of-network visits, you must meet the $6,900 deductible and pay 50% coinsurance.

Meanwhile, the BlueCare Bronze 2351S plan covers 100% of outpatient mental health and substance use disorder treatment, but you must meet your $9,100 deductible first. In-network hospital visits are completely covered under the same terms. Out-of-network outpatient services are not available.

Both of these plans offer telehealth care, and most Florida Blue plans provide telehealth benefits with in-network providers.

How to Check Your Florida Blue Rehab Coverage?

You can check your Florida Blue rehab coverage by contacting your insurance provider or one of your healthcare providers. When speaking with them, it’s essential to assess both your in-network and out-of-network benefits. You should also ask about deductibles, premiums, co-pays, coinsurance, and limitations.

  1. Look for a Member Services number if you have a Florida Blue insurance card. This is often the most direct line for information about your benefits. If you don’t have a card or can’t find a number, call 877-352-5830 to be automatically routed to your local Florida Blue help center.
  2. You can access the online member portal by navigating to the individual and family plans login page or the Medicare login page on the Florida Blue website. If you do not have an online account, you can set one up by providing your member number, date of birth, name, and zip code.
  3. If you don’t have insurance or you’re trying to assess coverage options for a loved one, you can use the online plan comparison tool to compare the coverage options offered by Florida Blue. You cannot enroll in a health insurance plan past January 15 unless you qualify for Special Enrollment.

Insurance coverage can be confusing, which is why it’s best to get information directly from your insurance company or ask the treatment facility you’re considering to contact them on your behalf. If you ask a facility to contact Florida Blue, they can provide you with an estimate of your out-of-pocket costs for the exact inpatient or outpatient programs you’re considering.

Types of Florida Blue Rehab Plans that Cover Addiction Treatment?

All health insurance plans from Florida Blue must offer some coverage for addiction treatment and mental health services. These services may include medical detox programs, inpatient hospitalization, inpatient residential treatment, partial hospitalization programs, and outpatient services.

While most evidence-based therapies and behavioral healthcare services are covered, insurance providers aren’t required to cover “alternative” or experimental therapies, such as acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, or art therapy programs. Discussing your treatment coverage with the rehab center you’re considering is the best way to learn about your benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Length of Stay Will Florida Blue Rehab Cover?

HealthCare.gov states that no health insurance company is allowed to put an annual or lifetime dollar limit on essential health benefits like substance use disorder treatment. However, your services may still be capped by a total number of days. If there are limitations on how long you can stay in rehab, it will depend on your specific policy.

How to Pay for Costs Florida Blue Rehab Doesn’t Cover?

Florida Blue may cover a substantial amount of your treatment costs, up to 100%, but this is after you pay your monthly premiums and deductibles. If you’re having trouble covering your out-of-pocket expenses, payment plans and other forms of financial assistance may be available to you. You can also reduce your costs by making sure you choose an in-network provider.

What to Do if Florida Blue Rehab Doesn’t Cover Rehab?

In the rare event that Florida Blue completely denies coverage for rehab, you can still get help. Ask the treatment facility you’re considering about sliding scale fees and payment plans, which can bring the cost of care down substantially. You may also consider a state-run or non-profit facility that offers care free of charge.

Grant programs and other financial assistance are also available to cover some or all of your costs. The best way to learn about these programs is to reach out to a treatment center directly and ask about availability and eligibility.

Do Rehab Facilities Need to Be In-Network?

If you have an HMO plan, you will have to see an in-network provider in order to receive coverage from Florida Blue. However, if you have an EPO or PPO plan, you can generally choose an out-of-network provider, although your out-of-pocket costs will often be higher.
