How Bad is Substance Use Disorder in New York?

We shared the following 2020 alcohol-related death stats:

  • 2020 state population: 19,336,776 (up 1.9% from 2000)

Over 1.9 million New Yorkers (1.77 million adults and 156,000 youth ages 12-17) have a substance abuse problem. Approximately twelve percent of State residents age 12 and older experience a substance use disorder (addiction or abuse) annually.

In 2019, 21.9% of male New York residents engaged in excessive drinking, which is slightly below the national average for men.

In 2020, drug overdose death rates were higher than the statewide average (25.4) in 10 of 15 counties for which there are data.

In 2014, there were a total of 281,780 admissions into New York alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers. Of that number, 73.3% were male, and 26.7% were female.

Between 2012-2013, 462,000 individuals or 2.8% of those over 12 were dependent upon illicit drugs. Of that number, only 12.8% suffering from illicit drug dependence/abuse received treatment.

In 2019, 4.5% of New York residents aged 12 or older had a substance use disorder involving illicit drugs.
