How Bad is Substance Use Disorder in New Mexico?

New Mexico has a high rate of substance abuse, with nearly one in ten adults and one in six young adults between 18 and 25 years old having a substance use disorder. Excessive alcohol consumption is a major substance use problem in New Mexico, resulting in the nation’s highest alcohol-related death rate.

The Substance Use Epidemiology Program collects and analyzes data on substance abuse in New Mexico and shares the results with community groups, policy makers, and other stakeholders. In 2018, there were over two thousand deaths related to substance abuse in New Mexico.

Per 100,000 residents, there are 24.8 statewide deaths related to drug use, while in Rio Arriba County, that rate is 83.6, almost four times the statewide average.

In 2009, there were 10,018 people who entered drug and alcohol addiction treatment in New Mexico, with 65.8% being males and 32.8% being females.
