How Bad is Substance Use Disorder in Alaska?

We shared the following 2020 alcohol-related death stats:

  • 242 deaths (up 137.3% from 2000)
  • 33.1 deaths per 100,000 people (up 103.1% from 2000)
  • 2020 state population: 731,158 (up 16.6% from 2000)

Alaska has seen a significant increase in drug overdose deaths from 2020 to 2021, with a 74% spike in overdose fatalities. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, and methamphetamine, a psychostimulant, were the primary drugs involved in these deaths. Certain demographic groups in Alaska have been at higher risk, including men more than women, Alaska Native people more than other ethnic groups, and residents of Anchorage and the Gulf Coast more than those in other parts of the state.

Additionally, substance use among older Americans has been on the rise, with troubling increases in death rates related to substance use among people 65 and older. Alcohol-related deaths, which had already been rising for a decade in this age group, rose by 18% in 2020, and deaths from opioids increased by 53% among Americans age 65 and older in 2020 over the previous year.

Finally, concerns about adolescent mental health and substance use have increased, particularly in light of gun violence and the COVID-19 pandemic. Substance use was more pronounced among several subpopulations, including American Indian and Alaska Native adolescents.
