How to Choose the Best Rehab in North Carolina for You?

Choosing an addiction treatment facility is a highly personal decision. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to addiction recovery, and everyone’s path looks different — even if they’re enrolled in the same program as someone else. You’ll have many choices to make before and during recovery, and the experience should feel personal and customized to you.

To help you choose the right program, follow these steps:

  1. Gather Information: Speaking with support groups and other community resources in your area can help you locate the addiction treatment center and program that’s right for you.
  2. Ask Questions: It’s always worth calling facilities to discuss what services they offer, and details like payment options or what private health insurance plans they accept.
  3. Assess Services: Not all facilities offer the same level of care. Most will offer behavioral therapy as part of a substance abuse treatment program, but you might need a treatment plan to help you set goals or strengthen family relationships.
  4. Choose a Location: Your distance from a facility matters if you’re choosing an outpatient program, unless you’re enrolling in telehealth services. If you’re going to be in an inpatient program, you may choose to go to treatment somewhere new, but you need to consider the upsides and downsides.
  5. Consider Amenities: Taking a holistic approach to your addiction recovery journey is important. Wellness programs, for example, can teach you healthy habits and make the transition to sober living that much easier. Always ask about the amenities rehab centers offer.

When choosing a rehab facility, don’t hesitate to call them up and speak with the team. They should be compassionate, knowledgeable, and ready to answer your questions about their services, specializations, and success rates. If you aren’t getting a good feeling when speaking with the helpline, it might not be the right facility for you.

Factors to Consider

Consider the following factors as you make a decision:

  • Is the facility you’re considering able to provide the proper support for your personal needs? Some facilities are LGBTQ-friendly while others focus on adolescents. It’s important to be connected with your peers.
  • Do they specialize in treating the substance you’ve been using? For example, opioid use disorder requires a very different approach than alcohol addiction.
  • What treatment services do they provide? For instance, do they offer talk therapy, music therapy, art therapy, and other enriching programs?
  • What aftercare services do they offer to help you with the transition out of structured treatment? Every rehab program should continue being there for you long after treatment.

Does Insurance Cover Drug & Alcohol Rehab in North Carolina?

Since 2010, addiction treatment has been considered an “essential benefit” that all insurance providers must offer. This does not mean that insurance will cover 100% of your costs, but it means anyone who has insurance will get at least some help covering the cost of substance abuse treatment.

Private Insurance

If you have private insurance, you will be entitled to at least partial coverage for your addiction treatment program. However, there may be limitations placed on when and where you can receive treatment. For instance, many insurers require you to get prior authorization in order for them to cover costs, and this can take 5-10 business days.

North Carolina also has a number of faith-based treatment programs, which insurance may not cover. Insurance will generally only pay for treatment at an accredited rehab center. Even at an accredited rehab center, insurance may not pay for experiential therapies.

The best way to figure out what benefits you are entitled to is to contact your insurance company directly and ask. If you are talking with a facility, you can give them your insurance information and they can call on your behalf.

Marketplace Plans

Marketplace plans are very standardized compared to private insurance policies, and that makes it far easier to understand how much of your addiction treatment costs will be covered. In general, the benefits schedule for drug rehab is as follows:

  • Bronze plans cover 60% of expenses
  • Silver plans cover 70% of expenses
  • Gold plans cover 80% of expenses
  • Platinum plans cover 90% of expenses

If you have the special Catastrophic plan, which is only available to some people, that also covers 60% of your addiction treatment expenses.

While these benefits are fairly straightforward, it’s important to note that there are still some requirements and restrictions to keep in mind. For instance, experiential therapies often aren’t covered. You may also need prior authorization in order to receive coverage, which can take 5-10 days.

Medicare and Medicaid

You may qualify for Medicare or Medicaid, which can cover some or all of your addiction treatment costs. If you aren’t already enrolled in one of these programs, note that it can take a month or more to get approval, but they may cover expenses accrued in the meantime if you’re approved.

You may qualify for Medicaid in North Carolina if you’re:

  • Under the age of 19
  • Over the age of 65
  • Pregnant
  • Parenting a minor
  • In a specified income range

Meanwhile, Medicare is a federal program available to people who are:

  • Over the age of 65
  • Disabled

Do All Rehab Centers in North Carolina Treat Alcohol & Drug Addiction?

Not all rehab centers in North Carolina treat addiction. Out of 742 facilities, only 508 offer addiction treatment programs and these programs differ from one facility to the next. For instance, some of these facilities are hospitals offering intensive inpatient treatment while others are residential treatment centers.

Some facilities in North Carolina are also operated by faith-based groups, and they don’t always adhere to the same standards as licensed rehab centers. Before enrolling in any program, make sure to ask questions about the services they provide.

What is the Typical Cost of Rehab in North Carolina?

The average cost of addiction treatment in North Carolina is $56,800. How much you’ll pay for addiction treatment in North Carolina varies widely depending on things like where you live and the type of program you choose.

Another important factor to consider when assessing costs is whether you choose medication-assisted treatment (MAT), which can increase costs substantially. However, it’s important to remember that the above numbers are only a rough estimate, and they can also be substantially lower if you have insurance or other means of covering your treatment.

If you’re worried about the cost of treatment, know that you will never be turned away regardless of your ability to pay. Grants and other funding sources can also help cover some or all of your treatment costs.

Can You Detox in North Carolina?

You can detox in North Carolina, either by reaching out to a rehab center. If you want to detox at home, you can utilize outpatient and telehealth services to help you do so safely. Trying to detox without the help of specialists can lead to intense withdrawal symptoms, cravings, and relapse.

Is Detox the Same as Rehab?

Detox and rehab are not the same things. Detoxification is the first phase of rehabilitation, but detox alone does not heal addiction. During detox, a person’s body adjusts to life without substances. The detox period lasts 3 to 10 days, but symptoms and cravings can continue for weeks. People learn to manage and heal from those symptoms and cravings during rehabilitation, which takes a month or more of structured treatment.

How Long Does a Typical Stay at a Detox Center in North Carolina Last?

A drug or alcohol detox typically lasts three to 10 days, with symptoms tapering off by the end of the first week. However, a person may continue to experience cravings and other withdrawal symptoms for months after the fact, which is why transitioning into a recovery program is essential to success.

Are There Emergency Detox Centers in North Carolina?

If you are looking for immediate admission into a drug or alcohol detox program, there are options throughout North Carolina. All hospitals can admit you as an inpatient immediately and then help you transition to a residential or outpatient program after the first or second week of detox. Some rehab centers also offer same-day admission.

Are There Any Free Detox Centers in North Carolina?

There are free detox centers in North Carolina where you can get help recovering from addiction. However, these free rehab centers are often faith-based and do not always conform to the latest medical standards. Before enrolling in a free program, ask about their treatment techniques.
