How Bad is Substance Use Disorder in Rhode Island?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, there were 10,147 admissions for drug and alcohol addiction treatment in Rhode Island in 2010. Of that number, 70.3% were for drug addiction. Rhode Island has seen an increase in drug overdose death rates from 17.7 per 100,000 in 2011 to 41.7 per 100,000 in 2021.

In 2015, 14,269 individuals in Rhode Island were enrolled in substance use treatment, an increase from 9,742 individuals in 2011. Among individuals in Rhode Island enrolled in substance use treatment in a single-day count in 2015, 34.0% were in treatment for a drug problem only, 20.5% were in treatment for an alcohol problem only, and 45.5% were in treatment for both drug and alcohol problems.

Alcohol abuse treatment admissions have been on the decline in Rhode Island since 1992, from 53% to 29% in 2006, while drug-only admissions have doubled from 21% to 46% during the same time frame. Men comprised the majority of those who abused alcohol either as a primary drug or alcohol with a secondary substance.

Rhode Island led the nation in a number of drug abuse categories and ranked above the national average for illicit drug use in 2007. Heroin is the most commonly cited drug among primary drug treatment admissions in Rhode Island, with 37% of primary treatment admissions in Rhode Island being for heroin in 2011.
