How Bad is Substance Use Disorder in Iowa?

Alcohol-related deaths in Iowa jumped to 923 in 2021, and in 2020, alcohol-related deaths jumped 26% from the previous year, reaching a total of 836. Iowa has the second-highest rate of excessive drinking in the country, and alcohol sales have nearly doubled over the last decade.

Opioid-related deaths in Iowa reached a record high of 258 in 2021, up 64% compared with 2019, with the largest increase occurring among young Iowans. Methamphetamine deaths are also at an all-time high in the state.
